Sunburn / Leaf Scorch

Sunburn occurs when a plant receives more direct light than it can handle, causing bleached or scorched patches on leaves.

Possiveis Causas

Sudden Exposure to Direct Sun

Why: Plants accustomed to indirect light can burn when suddenly moved into direct sunlight.

Signs to check: White or bleached patches on sun-facing leaves, damage appears within days of moving.

Intense Afternoon Sun

Why: Afternoon sun is much stronger than morning sun and can scorch even sun-tolerant plants.

Signs to check: Brown, crispy patches on the side facing the window, often west-facing exposure.

Magnification Through Glass

Why: Water droplets or certain window glass types can focus light and intensify burning.

Signs to check: Circular burn marks on leaves, damage on leaves closest to the window.

O Que Verificar

  • 1
Note where the damage appears on the plant relative to the light source
  • 2
Check if the plant was recently moved to a brighter spot
  • 3
Identify the direction the window faces and time of sun exposure
  • 4
Look for water droplets on leaves that could magnify light

O Que Voce Pode Fazer

  • Move the plant away from direct sunlight or add a sheer curtain
  • Gradually acclimate plants to brighter conditions over 1-2 weeks
  • Remove severely scorched leaves to redirect energy
  • Avoid misting leaves in direct sunlight
  • Water at the base rather than overhead during sunny periods

Quando Buscar Ajuda

  • Large portions of the plant are bleached or crispy
  • Plant is losing most of its leaves from scorch damage

Ponto Chave

Sunburn damage is permanent on affected leaves but the plant will recover once light is adjusted. Always acclimate gradually to brighter conditions.
