Sticky Leaves

A sticky residue on leaves is almost always honeydew — a sugary waste product excreted by sap-sucking insects. This requires investigation.

Possiveis Causas

Scale Insects

Why: Scale insects attach to stems and leaves, sucking sap and producing honeydew.

Signs to check: Small brown or tan bumps on stems and leaf undersides, sticky residue on and below the plant.

Aphids

Why: Aphids feed on plant sap in large numbers and excrete copious amounts of honeydew.

Signs to check: Clusters of small green, black, or white insects on new growth, sticky residue, curled leaves.

Mealybugs

Why: Mealybugs produce honeydew as they feed on sap, along with their characteristic white cottony covering.

Signs to check: White fluffy masses at leaf joints and stem bases, sticky residue on surrounding surfaces.

O Que Verificar

  • 1
Inspect the sticky leaves and stems closely with a magnifying glass
  • 2
Check leaf undersides, stem joints, and new growth for insects
  • 3
Look for small brown bumps (scale), white fluff (mealybugs), or clusters of tiny insects (aphids)
  • 4
Check surfaces below the plant for dripping honeydew

O Que Voce Pode Fazer

  • Isolate the plant immediately to prevent spreading to others
  • Wipe down sticky leaves with a damp cloth
  • For scale, dab individual insects with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab
  • Spray with insecticidal soap or neem oil solution, covering all surfaces
  • Repeat treatment every 7-10 days for at least 3 cycles

Quando Buscar Ajuda

  • Black sooty mold growing on the honeydew (secondary fungal issue)
  • Heavy infestation with visible plant decline
  • Pests have spread to neighboring plants

Ponto Chave

Sticky leaves almost always mean sap-sucking pests are present. Identify the pest type and begin treatment promptly, as infestations grow quickly.
