Mushy Stems

Soft, mushy stems indicate tissue breakdown, often caused by overwatering or bacterial/fungal infection. This is a serious sign that needs prompt attention.

Possiveis Causas

Overwatering and Root Rot

Why: Excess moisture causes root decay, which spreads upward into the stems.

Signs to check: Stem base is soft and discolored, soil is constantly wet, foul smell may be present.

Bacterial Soft Rot

Why: Bacteria enter through wounds or damaged tissue, causing rapid tissue breakdown.

Signs to check: Stems collapse suddenly, mushy areas may be slimy, spreads quickly.

Cold Damage

Why: Freezing temperatures cause cell walls to burst, resulting in mushy, water-soaked tissue.

Signs to check: Damage appeared after cold exposure, affected areas are translucent and water-soaked.

O Que Verificar

  • 1
Check how high up the stem the mushiness extends
  • 2
Inspect roots for rot — are they brown and mushy?
  • 3
Note any foul smell coming from the affected area
  • 4
Consider whether the plant was exposed to cold temperatures

O Que Voce Pode Fazer

  • Cut away all mushy stem tissue with a sterile blade until you reach firm, healthy tissue
  • Allow cut ends to dry and callus before replanting (for succulents and cacti)
  • Repot in fresh, dry soil with good drainage
  • Reduce watering significantly and ensure proper drainage
  • Propagate healthy top cuttings if the base is too far gone

Quando Buscar Ajuda

  • Mushiness has reached the main stem or crown of the plant
  • Entire base of the plant is soft and dark
  • Foul smell persists after removing affected areas

Ponto Chave

Mushy stems require urgent action. Remove all affected tissue, address overwatering, and consider propagating healthy sections as a backup.
