Edema / Bumps on Leaves

Edema appears as raised bumps, blisters, or corky growths on leaves. It occurs when the plant absorbs water faster than it can transpire.

가능한 원인

Overwatering with Low Transpiration

Why: When the plant takes up more water than it can release through its leaves, cells swell and burst.

Signs to check: Raised, blister-like bumps on leaf undersides, bumps may turn brown and corky over time.

High Humidity with Cool Temperatures

Why: Cool, humid conditions reduce transpiration while roots continue absorbing water.

Signs to check: Bumps appear during cool, overcast periods, primarily on newer leaves.

Inconsistent Environmental Conditions

Why: Fluctuating conditions between warm/dry and cool/humid can trigger edema.

Signs to check: Damage appears sporadically, corresponds with weather or seasonal changes.

확인 사항

  • 1
Check if bumps are on the undersides of leaves (characteristic of edema)
  • 2
Review watering frequency relative to light and temperature
  • 3
Assess humidity levels and air circulation
  • 4
Rule out pests — edema bumps are part of the leaf tissue, not removable

다음 단계

  • Reduce watering frequency and allow soil to dry more between waterings
  • Improve air circulation around the plant
  • Increase light exposure to boost transpiration
  • Avoid misting the plant excessively

도움을 구할 때

  • Bumps are accompanied by yellowing and leaf drop
  • Bumps are easily removed or contain insects (likely a pest, not edema)

핵심 포인트

Edema is a physiological condition, not a disease. It resolves when the balance between water uptake and transpiration is corrected.
