Underwatering Signs

While less dangerous than overwatering, chronic underwatering stresses plants and leads to poor growth, wilting, and leaf damage over time.

Infrequent Watering

Why: Simply forgetting or not watering often enough allows soil to dry out completely and stay dry.

Signs to check: Soil pulls away from pot edges, is completely dry throughout, plant wilts regularly.

Hydrophobic Soil

Why: When peat-based soil dries out completely, it becomes water-repellent and sheds water instead of absorbing it.

Signs to check: Water runs down the sides of the pot and out the bottom without soaking in, soil surface looks shiny.

Root-Bound Plant

Why: A pot packed with roots has little soil left to hold water, causing it to dry out very quickly.

Signs to check: Soil dries within a day of watering, roots visible at surface and drainage holes.

High Light or Temperature

Why: Plants in bright light or warm locations use and lose water faster through transpiration.

Signs to check: Plant is in a bright or warm spot, soil dries quickly, plant needs water more often than expected.
