Essential Plant Care Tools for Beginners
Starting your plant journey? Here are the must-have tools every new plant parent needs.
You do not need a lot of equipment to start caring for houseplants, but a few basic tools make a meaningful difference.
The Starter Kit
1. Watering Can with a Narrow Spout A narrow spout gives you control over water flow, helping you water the soil rather than the leaves. This is particularly important for plants prone to leaf fungal issues.
2. Moisture Meter An inexpensive soil moisture meter takes the guesswork out of watering. Simply insert the probe and check the reading.
3. Pruning Shears A clean, sharp pair of micro-tip pruning shears lets you: - Remove dead or yellowing leaves - Trim leggy growth - Take cuttings for propagation
4. Well-Draining Pots Always choose pots with drainage holes. Decorative cachepots (outer pots) without drainage are fine as covers, but remove the inner pot to drain after watering.
5. Quality Potting Mix Avoid garden soil for indoor plants. A quality indoor potting mix with perlite provides the drainage houseplants need.
6. Spray Bottle or Humidifier Many tropical plants appreciate higher humidity. A spray bottle provides a temporary boost, but a small humidifier near your plant collection is more effective for ongoing humidity.
Nice to Have
- -Humidity and temperature gauge
- -Fertilizer (balanced liquid, diluted to half strength)
- -Neem oil or insecticidal soap for pest prevention
- -Plant labels or a tracking app
